Exatel scales back WiMAX roll-out

WARSAW (WiMAX Day). The Warsaw Business Journal has reported that Exatel, a company owned by the public utilities with 3.5 GHz licenses in Poland, has annouced it will delay its intended launch of WiMAX service to only the cities of Warsaw and Kraków this year. The company had previosuly planned to launch WiMAX in 36 cities by the end of 2006, with an investment of US$ 50 million. The new management of Exatel, which was changed after the its president resigned last week, has now stated that Exatel will cover 19 cities in Poland by mid-2007, and it will reduce its investment to US$25 million. With the market for WiMAX becoming increasingly competitive in Poland, the delay from Exatel places their service well behind Netia and Crowley.
