SEOUL (WiMAX Day). As WiBro service takes off in Korea, KT, one of its main operators, has seen its influence grow in the global WiMAX industry. WiBro is the Korean version of mobile WiMAX based on the IEEE 802.16e standard. The service, launched earlier this year, does not have roaming capability.
In July 2005, KT joined the WiMAX Forum board of directors, and at the last meeting of the WiMAX Forum in San Diego, Mr H K Kim, a KT official, was approved to be the chair of the global roaming working group (GRWG). The GRWG is intended to investigate the operability of roaming with mobile WiMAX. Mr Kim has been in charge of technology cooperation in the mobile Internet business division of KT since 2004.
