AMMAN (WiMAX Day). The Jordanian Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) last week announced that it intends to auction spectrum in the 3.5 GHz frequency within the month. The announcement stated that this will be the first of three tenders. The first tender will auction a licence for spectrum that covers the city of Amman, and spectrum in the area surrounding Amman. TRC stated that the minimum fee has been set at JD 5 million (US$ 7.06 million). The first tender will be announced within the next two months, and the term of the licences will not exceed 15 years. The other tenders will take place six months after the results of the previous one. The pricing and allocation of this spectrum was partly determined from a market study that began in December 2005, and thereafter published under the title “Scarce Resources Allocation and Pricing” which treated the spectrum as a scarce resource that needed to be allocated accordingly. The TRC expects at least nine eligible companies will bid for the license.
