Mitsubishi plans WiMAX support

TOKYO (WiMAX Day). In an effort to improve the margins of its chipset business, Mitsubishi Electric Corp. announced last week that it will increase its business for chips outside of Japan, with particular focus on WiMAX. Mitsubishi specialises in making chips that regulate power and conserve energy in small consumer electronic devices, and this business accounts for two-thirds of its semiconductor sales. As one of the great challenges for mobile WiMAX handsets is the regulation of energy consumption and battery life, Mitsubishi believe that their expertise in this area will help them to quickly enter the market. Mitsubishi stated that they will begin to offer high-frequency chips that support WiMAX in April 2007.
