WASHINGTON DC (WiMAX Day). Representatives of Clearwire met with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Commissioner Michael Copps last week to discuss the AT&T and BellSouth merger. The meeting was convened at the request of Commissioner Copps, during which Clearwire stated that as a condition to the AT&T and BellSouth merger, BellSouth should be required to divest of it’s 2.5 GHz spectrum. A letter addressed to the FCC by Terri Natoli, Vice President for Regulatory Affairs & Public Policy at Clearwire, further states: “The AT&T/BellSouth proposed merger condition (which was advanced on October 13, 2006) regarding the initiation of ten new 2.3 or 2.5 GHz spectrum trials by the end of 2007, in no way addresses or minimizes the anticompetitive incentives that will exist, and the adverse impact that could occur to independent nationwide intermodal broadband alternatives, as a result of this merger were the merger entities permitted to retain their combined 2.3 and 2.5 GHz spectrum holdings.”
