MOSCOW (WiMAX Day). According to a report in Kommersant yesterday, number two Russian GSM operator Vimpelcom was awarded an extension to its spectrum in the 3.4 to 3.55 GHz range. Vimpelcom also had applied for 2.3 to 2.5 GHz spectrum in 92 cities in Russia, and the State Commission of Radio Frequencies (GKRCh) awarded Vimpelcom licenses for 34 cities. It was also announced that Megafon, the third largest GSM operator in Russia, has made an application for licenses of 2.5 to 2.7 GHz spectrum for the operation of WiMAX services. GKRCh announced in September that it would award several licences for spectrum in the 2.5 to 2.7 GHz range.
