JOHANNESBURG (WiMAX Day). The telecommunications regulator in South Africa, ICASA, is seeking comments on the possible award of new spectrum for WiMAX. ICASA concedes that the spectrum available for WiMAX in South Africa is scarce. According to the call for consultation published in the Government Gazette, there are currently three companies that hold licenses for 3.5 GHz. These include Telkom and Neotel who each have 2×28 Mhz of spectrum, and Sentech who own 2×14 Mhz of spectrum. The purpose of the consultation is to seek guidance on the best way to license the 60 Mhz of available spectrum. In the announcement, the ICASA states that for 3.5 GHz spectrum, “considering the amount of radio frequency spectrum available, [ICASA] is of the view that it is unable to assign such frequency in an equitable manner so as to cater for the relatively high demand.” Furthermore, ICASA announced it will also consider licensing more 2.6 GHz spectrum. Currently Sentech has a license for 50 Mhz and WBS/iBurst have a license for 14 MHz. ICASA intend to allocate an additional 126 Mhz in the 2.6 GHz frequency band.
