SÃO PAULO (WiMAX Day). Incumbent telecom operator Brasil Telecom (BrT) has announced that they intend to launch mobile WiMAX in the cities of Curitiba and Porto Alegre. BrT already has licenses for 3.5 Ghz spectrum that it acquired three years ago in an auction from Brazilian regulator Anatel. In a statement issued by BrT, Dante Nardelli Júnior, director of Technology and Planning Technician at Brasil Telecom said that WiMAX will “complement the current net of services of communication of existing data in these cities.” BrT intend that WiMAX will extend their broadband network, which according to a report in BNAmericas, reaches 1.2 million subscribers and is at its capacity. A WiMAX service is expected to complement current DSL broadband services, and according to Nardelli Júnior, BrT estimate there can be 200,000 existing broadband subscribers in the cities of Curitiba and Porto Alegre who may migrate to WiMAX when the service is available.
