TOKYO (WiMAX Day). Japanese WiMAX service provider Yozan and GSM operator Softbank Mobile (SBM) have announced their intention to forge an alliance to construct common communications infrastructure and to share the use of their existing base station facilities. The agreement will allow SBM to use 3,500 of the 5,500 base stations owned by Yozan on buildings. SBM is developing a 3G network in Tokyo, and the aim of the joint venture will be for SBM to quickly deploy its network using the base station infrastructure of Yozan. Furthermore, all future base stations will be constructed jointly for the mutual benefit of both networks. A spokesman for Yozan indicated that this joint venture may open up other opportunities between Softbank and Yozan in the future, as their networks and services are complementary.
