Austar and Unwired support Woosh

AUCKLAND (WiMAX Day). As Woosh Wireless battles to defend its rights to 2.3 GHz spectrum in New Zealand, the Independent Financial Review reports that Australian companies Austar and Unwired have stood up to support Woosh in its efforts. Woosh acquired use and management rights to 2.3 GHz spectrum, including spectrum from SkyTV, and those rights are set for renewal in 2010. Woosh contend that it should retain its existing rights when they come up for renewal. However, the Ministry of Economic Development may decide to re-allocate that spectrum in 2010 and split it into three bands of 30 Mhz each and sell it at auction. The report in the Independent quoted Deanne Weir, director of corporate development and legal affairs at Austar, saying that Austar support Woosh in the view that if spectrum is utilised by a license-holder, the rights to that spectrum are should be renewed automatically.
