FITel plans WiMAX tests in Taiwan

TAIPEI (WiMAX Day). According to a report in DigiTimes, First International Telecom (FITel) plans to install five WiMAX base stations in Taipei for field tests that will begin in early 2007. FITel operates low-power PHS mobile services in Taiwan. In their announcement, FITel noted that the testing will be subsidized by the government-sponsored M-Taiwan program, and FITel intend to install up to 30 base stations throughout Taipei. Nortel will supply the initial five base stations for the trial, and FITel will also test base stations from Motorola and Alcatel. The announcement stated that for a WiMAX network to fully cover the Taipei metropolitan region, it would require up to 700 base stations. FITel further stated that when the service is launched, it intends to offer the following services: Wireless Broadband Internet, Internet Telephony, Mobile Entertainment and Mobile Banking.
