GRAND RAPIDS (WiMAX Day). The American city of Grand Rapids, Michigan announced last week that it will award a contract to Clearwire to provide a municipal WiMAX network that will “offer mobile, portable, and nomadic data service throughout the City’s 45 square miles.” This is the first time that Clearwire has partnered with a municipality to build a network. It is expected that the network will include many of the Wi-Fi hotspots already deployed in strategic locations in the city. Grand Rapids released an RFP in January 2006, and nine companies submitted final bids in April. Following a review of all bids, Clearwire was “unanimously selected as the company best suited to meet Grand Rapids requirements.”
