Intel unveils WiMAX in Egypt

OSSEM (WiMAX Day). The recent journey to the Middle East as part of Intel Chairman Craig Barrett’s “100-day Trek” stopped yesterday at a small city of Oseem on the Nile River in Egypt. According to a press release, “Intel installed a state-of-the-art WiMAX network to connect two public schools, a health care center on wheels, a municipal building and an e-government services kiosk. Intel also donated and installed computers in the mobile health center and PC labs at the two schools where students and teachers can regularly connect to the outside world for the first time.” The WiMAX network installed in Oseem was constructed with a extended transmission capability of 30 kilometres. Barrett has made similar trips around the world this year, from South America to Africa, promoting the benefits of WiMAX technology to rural areas, and how it can help communities, government and most particularly, education and healthcare. Barrett stated during his visit in Egypt that “The next billion Internet users will be from rural areas like Oseem.”
