OSLO (WiMAX Day). Alcatel-Lucent announced yesterday that it has been selected by the Norwegian Oil Industry Association (OLF) to test the use of WiMAX on oil platforms in the North Sea. The objective of the testing will be to confirm if the use of WiMAX technology will improve data communication with the offshore platforms. A press release from Alcatel states that OLF hopes to improve the communication between offshore platforms and oil tankers, especially in foul weather conditions. OLF decided to test WiMAX based on its long-range ability and high capacity. Other companies have been testing WiMAX on oil platforms in the last year, particularly Redline Communications in the Gulf of Mexico, and Telenor of Norway also has been exploring WiMAX technology for offshore use with other Norwegian oil companies.
