Alternet expands Kiev network

KIEV (WiMAX Day). Ukrainian High Technologies (UHT) announced last week that Alternet, its WiMAX brand name, has completed the first phase of construction of its network in the area around Kiev, which uses 3.5 GHz spectrum. The company has also received permission from the telecommunication regulator for commercial exploitation and connection of subscribers in the nearby city of Vasilikove. According to a company press release, the installed base stations there reportedly cover up to 30 km and can provide access to the Internet in the nearby towns of Glewaha, Kalinovka, and Marhalevka. With this construction, Alternet now covers all of the outlying areas of Kiev.

UHT is using Alvarion’s BreezeMAX 3500 for its network, and will soon expand its network to Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Odessa, and Lviv. “BreezeMAX gives us many technological and economic advantages in bringing WiMAX services to the Ukraine,” said Yuriy Chuikov, General Director, UHT, in a press release from Alvarion. “Our successful launch of WiMAX networks in Kiev and Kharkov—with their demanding business and private subscribers—demonstrates the viability of using the BreezeMAX 3500 to serve densely populated urban areas. Alvarion is our WiMAX partner in fulfilling our commitment to provide broadband services to the general population of the Ukraine.”
