ISPs in India seek WiMAX support

NEW DELHI (WiMAX Day). As WiMAX fever spreads across India, small Internet services providers (ISPs) are increasingly worried about the potential loss of business that ubiquitous WiMAX services may cause them. Last week the Internet Service Providers Association of India (ISPAI) applied to the Telecom Regulatory Authority for support that will help local ISPs gain WiMAX licenses and provide broadband services in rural areas. According to the ISPAI, nearly 95 percent of all dial-up and broadband Internet access is provided by large service providers in India, principally telecom groups, and there are some 150 small ISPs serving rural populations.
