Altech tests WiMAX in S Africa

JOHANNESBURG (WiMAX Day). South African technology systems provider Altech announced this week that it received a license from the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) to test WiMAX services. The test license permits Altech to use 10 Mhz of the 2.59 GHz frequency band, according to Altech CTO Steve Sidley.

Altech also announced that it will work with Samsung Electronics to build the test network that will offer voice, data and Internet access in the city of Gauteng.

ICASA has granted WiMAX licenses to iBurst, Telkom, Neotel, and Sentech, and has yet to grant commercial licenses to the GSM operators MTN and Vodacom.
