PARIS (WiMAX Day). Alcatel-Lucent announced today that is has invested in WiMAX chipset maker Sequans Communications. The terms of the investment were not disclosed by either party, except that the investment is an extension of the last round of $24 million funding that was raised in July 2006.
The two companies had previously entered into a collaboration in November 2006 to develop WiMAX chipsets for equipment that were targeted for use in developing countries.
In a press release, Karim El Naggar, vice president of the Alcatel-Lucent WiMAX Business Unit, said “Our investment in Sequans shows our commitment to WiMAX and our interest in supporting the development of the leading WiMAX technologies.”
Sequans also received an investment from Motorola in November, and previous investors in the company include Kennet Venture Partners, Add Partners, Cap Decisif, T-Source, SG Asset Management and Vision Capital.
