DALLAS (WiMAX Day). Brownsville, a seaside city in Texas near the border of Mexico, made popular by a Bob Dylan song, will soon claim its own WiMAX network. IBM announced today that it will work with the city of Brownsville to construct a “citywide security-enhanced wireless network.”
The network is intended for use of official city services such as utilities, ambulance, and police, for remote monitoring and to access real-time data. The network also will provide community Internet access, “aimed at improving technology availability and increasing the technology skills of Brownsville citizens,” according to a press release from IBM.
The network will use three towers to broadcast the WiMAX network with a radius of several miles. “We’re growing at a record pace, and the best way for Brownsville to provide city services is by embracing new technology,” said Charlie Cabler, Brownsville city manager.
