MTN seeks WiMAX partner in SA

JOHANNESBURG (WiMAX Day). MTN, the second largest GSM network in South Africa is reportedly searching for a partner to launch WiMAX services. The partner must have one of the four highly coveted spectrum licenses, of which only three available, as the leading GSM network Vodacom has already acquired one license holder. According to a report in Business Day, MTN is holding discussions with Telkom, Neotel, and Sentech each of which are licensed for 3.5 GHz frequency use, and also may be negotiating with Altech, which recently won a license to test WiMAX. MTN previously had a test license for WiMAX, however the Independent Communications Authority of SA (Icasa) denied MTN permission to make that a full commercial license.
