Virgin Media may bid for Pipex

LONDON (WiMAX Day). Several publications in the UK have reported that Virgin Media may bid for Pipex Group, the UK Internet broadband provider, which is accepting bids from potential acquirers this week. Virgin Media was formed recently through the merger of Virgin Mobile and NTL/Telewest, the largest UK cable operator. The deal would reportedly add an additional 570,000 fixed-line broadband customers from Pipex, but more importantly, it would provide Virgin with access to Pipex Wireless, the WiMAX joint venture between Intel and Pipex. Virgin operates an MVNO mobile business, and an acquisition of Pipex would give the company access to the radio spectrum owned by Pipex. The Register also reported that BT has received permission from UK regulators to proceed with a bid for Pipex. Other bidders for Pipex, which is represented by UBS, are said to include Sky TV, Tiscali and Orange.
