Telkom SA begins WiMAX trials

JOHANNESBURG (WiMAX Day). The South African journal BusinessDay has reported that Telkom, the incumbent fixed-line operator, has begun trials of WiMAX in advance of a planned commercial launch of services in two months. The report quotes Steven Hayward, managing executive for Telkom retail marketing, saying, “Telkom would like to see that all customers have fair access to broadband technology. The WiMAX product offering will go a long way towards ensuring that customers in remote areas have access to high-speed Internet.” It was further noted that up to 400 subscribers would participate in the trials, and Telekom will provide the services and home installation of equipment, free of charge.
