BT goes shopping for WiMAX

LONDON (WiMAX Day). The online journal Unstrung reports that British Telecom (BT) has issued an RFI (request for information) to equipment vendors. Details of the RFI were not disclosed, however the report notes that Alvarion responded to the RFI jointly with Cisco. Rudy Leser, corporate vice president of strategy and marketing at Alvarion said “the RFI, for me, is a milestone. In Europe, BT will be one of the first adopters of mobile WiMAX on a big scale.” The report also suggests that BT may bid for the 2.6 GHz spectrum to be auctioned later this year in the UK. However, according to BT Wholesale chief technology officer Matt Beal, “if the auction gets too aggressive we don’t have to play — we have learned from our past experience. If the price is right, then that’s fine. If the price is too high then the MVNO opportunity is the other option.”
