KIEV (WiMAX Day). The Russian telecommunication operator JSC Comstar UTS, a division of AFK Sistema, has completed the acquisition of the outstanding 25% in its Ukraine subsidiary Comstar-Ukraine. Comstar UTS acquired the remaining shares for US$900,000. Comstar UTS holds licenses to 2.5 GHz and 3.5 GHz spectrum in Russia, and in November 2006 the company received a license in Ukraine to operate WiMAX services in the 5.4 ~ 5.7 GHz frequency band in Kiev and its regions, as well as in the cities Odessa and Lvov. Comstar UTS is planning significant deployment of WiMAX in Russia and Ukraine, and according to Eric Franke, CEO of Comstar UTS, Ukraine has “significant development potential for the rollout of WiMAX-based services.”
