MTN-Uganda launches WiMAX

KAMPALA (WiMAX Day). East African GSM provider MTN-Uganda announced that it is launching a WiMAX network. According to the company’s chief commercial officer, Erik van Veen, “There is a substantial unmet need for very high-speed internet access. WiMAX is an advanced solution, designed to meet this need, and to do so in a low-cost, flexible way.” At a press conference this week, Phinda Ncala, the chief technology officer for MTN-Uganda, said “WiMAX no longer is just a promise, a potential. Now it’s here, it’s real.” The company also noted that its WiMAX network “will initially be used as a fixed data platform, but will replace 3G as a broadband network by 2008.”
