TOKYO (WiMAX Day). The president of Japanese telecom giant KDDI said this week that his company will seek to partner with other companies in an effort to obtain a license for 2.5 GHz spectrum that can be used for WiMAX. “We are studying various options in the event we can’t obtain the permit on our own,” KDDI president and chairman Tadashi Onodera said at a press conference. Like other large telecom operators in Japan, KDDI is forbidden from participating in the upcoming spectrum auction, as the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has decided to force competition in the market by giving licenses to new market entrants. The position for KDDI is difficult. It has been testing WiMAX for more than one year, and it is a very active board member of the WiMAX Forum.
