MOSCOW (WiMAX Day). In the far east of Russia, WiMAX network operator Synterra is said to be bidding on 60 regional GSM licenses, according to a report in the Vladivostok Times. Synterra plans to combine GSM and WiMAX services. “We are convinced that the future of communications is in the cross-standard roaming of the GSM and WiMAX networks. By building networks of both standards (GSM 1800/WiMAX) in the Primorsky and Khabarovsk Territories, we are planning to form an experimental zone for such kind of roaming,” said Synterra press secretary Ekaterina Andreyeva in the report. Other bidders for the spectrum include GSM operator Beeline, and fixed-line operator Golden Telecom.
