Nortel increases WiMAX R&D

(WiMAX Day). Nortel Networks has increased its investment in WiMAX research and development to US$100 million, ten times greater than last year. Nortel CTO John Roese said in a recent interview that the company is investing a greater amount in emerging technologies such as WiMAX than in “late-lifecycle products,” such as GSM technology. Nortel sold its unprofitable UMTS business last year, which helped to focus R&D work. WiMAX is now a key investment area for Nortel, Roese said, because “it can be a reusable network for mobile data, DSL replacement, video distribution, and real 4G wireless. It will be built once and used for many purposes.”
