French regulator sees digital dividend

PARIS (WiMAX Day). The French telecoms regulator Arcep published a report last week that said the “income generated by the use of radio spectrum is estimated at over €200 billion per year in Europe.” However the report concludes that this scarce resource must be better managed. Arcep said it will launch a consultation to explore better methods for the use of radio spectrum in France. Amongst their many proposals will look at liberating the 2.5 ~ 2.69 GHz spectrum range currently occupied by the Ministry of Defence. Arcep also indicated that the 3.4 ~ 3.6 GHz spectrum used for WiMAX might be used as the principal spectrum for 4G technologies in France until 2010.
