POSDATA, Mobile WiMAX Makes Big Splash

SEOUL (Press Release). POSDATA is widely expected to show tangible results in the second half of this year, including the successful completion of field tests with telecommunications carriers using its in-house developed Mobile WiMAX system.

POSDATA recently decided to pursue a second-phase development project with KT, a domestic service provider, to apply IPv6, a next-generation IP address system, to Mobile WiMAX. Accordingly, POSDATA will conclude a formal contract with KT to carry out the project, to be completed by early next year. POSDATA successfully completed the first-phase development project last year and has drawn up a plan to develop a system that enables commercializable services in the IPv6 environment through this second-phase project.

In addition, POSDATA is in the process of developing a technology that would enable the application of Mobile WiMAX to the national defense TICN (Tactical Information Communication Network). To win a contract for this Ministry of National Defense project and create more opportunities to apply Mobile WiMAX technology to national defense, POSDATA established a cooperative structure with defense companies, including LIG Nex1, Huneed Technologies, and Hyundai Dacom.

The company is actively marketing equipment overseas. POSDATA smoothly completed testing for technology validation in the first half of this year, together with telecommunications carriers in Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, and other high priority countries. It is currently in final negotiations for the supply of equipment in the second half of this year.

Frequencies have already been allocated and service providers selected for commercial services in some of these countries, and they will be allocated and selected in other remaining countries in the second half of this year. As a result, these countries have been gaining attention from equipment suppliers, and they are also the first besides Korea that will likely commence Mobile WiMAX services.

Managing Director of POSDATA Shi Jun-il said, “The interest in Mobile WiMAX demonstrated by telecommunications carriers in these regions runs much deeper than mere curiosity about the technology. It is in a mature phase, and the carriers have even established detailed roadmaps for commercial services. It is expected that the supply of equipment to 3-4 companies will be possible by the end of this year.”
