NEW DELHI (WiMAX Day). The state-owned Indian telecommunications operator BSNL has requested an allocation of 2.5 GHz spectrum from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) that will enable the company to deploy a WiMAX network that connects 50,000 customer service kiosks throughout India. While the DoT has yet to approve its 3G spectrum policy, which includes WiMAX spectrum, a report in the Economic Times said that it is likely that the DoT will allocate the spectrum to BSNL. The company indicated that it has already released a tender bid for companies to supply equipment to the project, which it expects will be completed by August 2008.
