SANTIAGO (WiMAX Day). The Mexican telecoms conglomerate Telmex announced that it has launched a mobile WiMAX network in Chile based on the 802.16e mobile standard. According to a report in BNAmericas, executives from Telmex demonstrated the service while “accessing the internet from their laptops while driving around in golf carts.” The report said that the general manager of Telmex in Chile, Eduardo Díaz Corona, said the network will be deployed in several phases, but should cover 98% of the population by the middle of 2008. Telmex already operate a fixed WiMAX network that will have the same coverage in the next few weeks. The report said that equipment for the mobile WiMAX network was supplied by Alcatel-Lucent.
