JOHANNESBURG (WiMAX Day). This week the South African telecoms group Vodacom announced its interim results for the six months ended 30 September 2007. In a press release issued by the company, Vodacom CEO Alan Knott-Craig said that “commercial access to the WiMAX network should be a reality by the end of the current financial year.”
Vodacom also said that it will increase its ownership of WBS to 25.1%. WBS is one of several companies that own licenses for WiMAX spectrum.
According to a report in the South African web journal MyBroadband, Vodacom’s Chief Operating Officer Pieter Uys said earlier this week that Vodacom is now conducting several trials of WiMAX equipment, “and the initial aim is to set up a few hundred WiMAX base stations.”
