Sequans leads R&D on WiMAX 2.0

PARIS (WiMAX Day). The chipset maker Sequans Communications announced last week that it will lead a WiMAX development project “to develop a new air interface for the next generation of WiMAX, , and to make key contributions to the IEEE 802.16m task group.” According to a company press release, the project, named WiMAGIC, has been established and funded by the European Commission. Sequans will work with on the project with six technology partners and six universities, as part of the EC’s 7th Framework Programme for Research. Sequans said that the result, WiMAX 2, “will be backwards compatible with current Mobile WiMAX systems based on the IEEE 802.16e-2005 standard, but is intended to deliver much higher performance.”
