Tata plans $500m WiMAX network

NEW DELHI (WiMAX Day). Tata Communications, one of India’s largest companies, intends to invest up to USD 500 million over the next three years to build what would be one of the world’s largest WiMAX networks. The Financial Times reported that with broadband penetration at less than one percent, Tata hopes to dramatically boost “the country’s tiny number of broadband internet connections.” Reuters report this week that Shankar Prasad, president of Tata’s retail business unit, said “the company expects 200,000 wireless broadband customers by March 2009.” In a press release this week, Telsima Corporation announced that it has been selected by Tata to supply equipment for the network. “Telsima would provide WiMAX infrastructure and subscriber equipment solutions to deploy the commercial WiMAX network. It is setting up 3,000 base stations, which will enable customers to access video, education, music and business services,” Shankar Prasad told The Hindu.
