WELLINGTON (WiMAX Day). The Commerce Commission in New Zealand will permit Telecom New Zealand use its 2.5 GHz spectrum for either WiMAX or 3G services. The company acquired management rights to the spectrum in December 2007 at an auction by the Ministry of Economic Development. At issue was whether Telecom, one of five successful bidders in the auction, would inhibit competition in the WiMAX market. Telecom New Zealand argued that each of the companies that acquired spectrum licenses were significant competitors, and that a competitive market would be ensured. On Friday, Commerce Commission Chairwoman Paula Rebstock said the commission did not feel that Telecom New Zealand’s acquisition of the licenses would effect competition in the development of WiMAX.
