SCHAUMBURG (WiMAX Day). Motorola announced today that it will spin-off its mobile handset business and create “two independent, publicly-traded companies.” Greg Brown, Motorola’s president and chief executive officer, said in a press statement that Motorola’s “decision to separate our Mobile Devices and Broadband & Mobility Solutions businesses follows a review process undertaken by our management team and Board of Directors, together with independent advisors.” The Broadband & Mobility Solutions business at Motorola houses its WiMAX networking products, as well as its voice and data communications businesses. The spin-off is expected to take effect in 2009.
