KINGSTON (WiMAX Day). A report in BNamericas today said that the Spectrum Management Authority (SMA) of Jamaica expects to license frequencies for 2.5 GHz spectrum within the next 3-4 months. The report notes that Ernest Smith, managing director of the SMA, said that it is awaiting approval from the government. “One of the government’s policies is to deploy ubiquitous broadband services throughout Jamaica. Currently we have very limited access to broadband services, so we have been devising different strategies to change that. We see it [the 2.5GHz band licenses] as an opportunity to achieve that policy objective,” said Smith. WiMAX is very much the technology that the government has in mind for use of the 2.5 GHz spectrum, the report said, following recommendations of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) last year.
