Clearwire expects 30m subscribers by 2017

NEW YORK (WiMAX Day). Clearwire Corporation held an investor meeting today to expound upon its planned business combination with Sprint Nextel’s WiMAX business. Evidence of the future success of the “new” Clearwire was observed by Jim Murray, Managing Director at Morgan Stanley, who said Clearwire “is going to revolutionise the way that wireless companies go to market in the United States.”

Initially, Clearwire executives reviewed the structure of the proposed investment from Intel, et al, and the conditions for closing the transaction with Sprint. Once completed, the new Clearwire will have a national spectrum position in America of greater than 120 MHz in the 2.5 GHz frequency band, covering more than 42 billion MHz pops.

Farther afield, the company estimates it will have 30.7 million subscribers by 2017, which will generate revenue of USD 17.5 billion, and up to USD 8 billion in EBITDA. Today Clearwire has some 450,000 subscribers, which generated approximately USD 52 million in revenue in Q108, according to John Butler, CFO for Clearwire.

For the immediate future, Clearwire expects to expand its subscriber base to 1.3 million by the end of next year, in a territory that covers 80 million people. By 2011, Clearwire plan to double its coverage up to 160 million people, and forecasts 8.5 million subscribers, with roughly have of them being wholesale customers through re-sale partners such Sprint, Comcast or Time Warner. Coverage of 220 million people is forecast in America by 2017.

The key factor that will drive growth for Clearwire will be a suite of five services, which includes residential voice and broadband, mobile voice, broadband, and entertainment. Currently only residential voice and broadband services are offered. The company illustrated that as subscribers use more services, particularly entertainment-based services, ARPU will increase to USD 64, as subscribers will use more than only one service. This is in comparison to what a typical household spends today on these services, which is between USD 109 and 258 per month.

Presently Clearwire has begun the lengthy process of filing for regulatory approval of the proposed business combination, and it expects to close the transaction by the end of this year.
