AccessKenya taps Alvarion for WiMAX network

NAIROBI (WiMAX Day). Alvarion Ltd announced today that it was chosen by AccessKenya Group, Kenya’s leading ISP and major carrier, to deploy a WiMAX network in the cities of Mombasa and Nairobi. The network will target residential subscribers that require high speed Internet access. AccessKenya has considerable experience in the local Internet market, and according to Jonathan Somen, managing director of AccessKenya Group, the company believes that this “gives customers the comfort that they are buying a tried and tested product…. We know data and we are now taking that expertise to the residential market.” AccessKenya already has invested USD 3.5 million to build its WiMAX network, which includes 35 base stations in Nairobi and Mombasa.
